Cleaning is a constant chore around our home. No matter how many machines or cleaning products we consume to make our life easier, it sill to this day a never ending battle to keep our home organized and clean. Thank goodness for those cleaning innovations like washing machines and dishwashers. In 1965 the average housewife would spend 44.5 hours on housework. Wow almost 15 hours a day!! Now we spend around 18 hours a week.
For all those cleaning innovations that have come our way there is nothing better that the tried and tested natural cleaners that really work. Over the last couple of years I have been really concerned with what chemicals are really in our household cleaners, our air quality in our home. Lets face it, I live in Ontario Canada, the only time a year we open our windows for fresh air is Spring and Fall.
A friend of mine introduced me to DoTerra essential oils and I am hooked. They are such a pure oil. You can apply them topically (add to your skin), orally (a drop in a glass of water or food), or aromatically (in a diffuser). I am learning everyday all the many uses for these oils and one I really like to do is clean with them. The house smells so fresh, inviting and clean with these oils. The great thing about it is I can whip them up in no time at all.
I just want to add that these opinions are my own and if you need to read all about my disclosure policy. You can find it here.
These natural cleaning products I keep around my home.
White Vinegar – has 4 to 20% acetic acid which makes it a great disinfectant and can tackle household germs and bacteria. It also cuts grease and deodorizes.
Baking Soda – has been used since ancient times as a deodorizer, soother and cleanser. Its Cuts grease, deodorizes, lifts dirt and whitens.
Castile Soap – is a great addition to cleaning in your home, its made from plant oils. My favourite one so far is Mr. Bonner’s Castile soap. It is on the pricey side but a little goes a long way. It cuts grease and lifts dirt.
Rubbing Alcohol: is another great disinfectant. You can also use it for a streak free shine. That is why it is a must in my window cleaner.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Is a really nice wood polish, or its great to use on stainless steel appliances.
These items listed above are a great start to cleaning more naturally at home. But if you want more cleaning and disinfectant power try these DoTerra essential oils. These also support the body and kills harmful germs and bacteria. My favourite oils I keep handy for cleaning my home are:
DoTerra Lemon: This essential oil is so versatile. From aiding in digestion to protecting your wood or leather furniture. Lemon has such a purifying power. Also when diffused lemon oil uplifts and helps promote a positive mood. Much needed when I am cleaning and also the one I use the most. It is also cost effective.
DoTerra TEA TREE OIL : also known as Melaleuca. This oil is extracted from a plant in Australia. Tea Tree Oil is known for its purifying qualities by disinfecting surfaces and purifying the air.
DoTerra WILD ORANGE: This one is a family favourite and another very versatile essential oil. It too is known for its purifying and disinfecting qualities. I love to use this one as a replacement for Frebreeze.
DoTerra LAVENDER: Soothes skin irritations and promotes healthy relaxation and sleep.
DoTerra GRAPFRUIT: helps uplift mood and clarifies the mind. It is also known for its cleansing and purifying properties.
DOTERRA LEMONGRASS: promotes healthy digestion, its aroma can heighten awareness and promote a positive outlook.
DOTERRA PEPPERMINT: promotes healthy respiratory function and help settle an upset stomach. Plus is has antibacterial properties.
I keep these recipes in my home binder so they are handy when I need to make some more.
The only little tid bit is to shake the bottle each time before use. The essential oils have a tendency to separate from the solution. But other than that, I love the way they clean.
I also made some cleaning labels for you as well. I printed them on label paper from Staples and cut them out.
Don’t forget our Toilet Bowl cleaning labels:
I also have some other cleaning supplies that I keep handy to help keep everything polished. Microfiber clothes are colour coded for each task. I also have a window cloth for the windows and scrub brush for the grout on the floors.
These homemade natural cleaners are so cost efficient. A drop of lemon essential oil is about $0.04 a drop, grapefruit essential oil is about $0.07 a drop. I was skeptical at first how well they work but some of them I love them more that the store bought ones. Click here to get the best oils with discounted prices.
