I have been having a bit of a gardening thumb lately. We planted out raised garden early this year and we have been working away at our outdoor space. Its so peaceful and quiet out there after a long day, we wanted in incorporate low maintenance greenery on our back patio that keeps unwanted pests away.
David found a lady selling all of her terracotta pots so we went and bought all of them. About 15 of them all different sizes and different shapes. I picked this one to update.
I found a unique textured finish spray paint by Rust-Oleum. It looks like stone and sprayed my terracotta pot.
A low maintenance and cost effective way to plant greenery in your backyard is with different herbs. I chose herbs that would help keep pests away like flies and mosquitoes.
I used Lemongrass and lavender in this pot. I love the fragrance of both of them.
Other herbs you can use to keep unwanted pests away on your patio or outdoors even plant in your garden are:
Catnip – If you love cats but don’t like mosquitoes, this is a great plant to attract those cute felines.
Lavender: promotes restful sleep. It also keeps away gnats as well as mosquitoes. You can also dry the leaves and place in your closet for a natural away to keep away moths.
Basil: You can also use Cinnamon Basil and Lemon Basil to keep unwanted pests at bay. Also used in cooking that awesome spaghetti sauce!
Lemon Balm: will keep mosquitoes at bay but will attract bees and butterflies (butterflies I would not mind). Make sure to plant this herb in a pot instead of the garden, it is known for taking over like mint.
Marigolds: If you have tomato plants that need protection use marigolds and they look pretty too.
Lemongrass: citronella is a natural oil found in lemongrass and we all know citronella keeps mosquitoes away..
Rosemary: Not only does it keep mosquitoes away but other annoying pests as well. Another great herb that has a variety of uses.
Mint: Is another herb that you need to make sure you plant it in a pot instead of your garden because it can take over very quickly. My favourite flavoured water, sliced lemon, cucumber and a mint leaf left in a large container of water. It is sooo refreshing.
